J596 Special Education Project – Thai/Burma Border

The KWO Special Education Project was established in the 2 northern Karen refugee camps in 2003. Then in 2007 World Education/Consortium handed over to KWO their SE program which had been running concurrently in the 5 southern camps.
KWO implements the Special Education Project in 7 Karen refugee camps. There are currently 578 children with disabilities and their families that are supported by the program. In the 2009-10 project cycle we expect the number of beneficiaries to rise to 629. Including all staff and direct beneficiaries the total number of project participants will be 810 in 2009-10.
The Special Education Project has 4 components:

  • Early Intervention with young children with disability (home visits and learning centre) in 7 camps.
  • Inclusive Education (up to Standard 2 in mainstream schools, SE centres and home visits) in 7 camps.
  • School for students with hearing impairments in 6 camps.
  • School for students with visual impairments in 2 camps.
  • The major program objective is to promote the basic rights of all children and youth living with disability in Karen refugee camps by supporting and expanding the care and educational services to those children and youth and their families and by strengthening community awareness and acceptance.

Planet Wheeler is the major sponsor of this project.
